In recent years, I have noticed that the cactus has emerged as a popular icon in many classrooms. I have to admit I was intrigued and did a little research to learn more about the cactus.
It turns out that beyond a cactus’ spiky exterior, the cactus symbolizes resilience, adaptability, and growth in the face of challenging environments. Wow! Perfect for helping to establish and grow, that growth mindset so many students are lacking.
And with all the challenges teachers face today, I am not sure I know many humans that display more resilience, adaptability, and face more challenging environments daily than educators. So long story short, the cactus represents values and qualities that align with the journey of students and educators alike.
Our classrooms are both dynamic and demanding environments. Teachers and students face challenges every day both in our classrooms and at home.
And so, this year, I have decided to adopted the cactus icon for my own personal well being, and of course, that of my students. By emphasizing the importance of resilience and perseverance, as well as modeling the ability to bounce back from setbacks, and thrive in challenging circumstances my hope is that we all can have the best school year every!
