I have been using a math word wall in my classroom for years, but recently I have noticed several things about my word wall.  First off, I had too many words!  So many words, in fact, that each individual word is really too small to read from most desks in my classroom.  Many of the words on my math word wall are generally not referenced very often.  Turns out, in my opinion, that there are ‘high-frequency’ math words.  These ‘high-frequency’ math words are the very words I have decided to feature in my classroom.  Because I have fewer words I will be featuring, the print can be larger and I can go into more detail, even showing examples, of the word’s meaning.

My first 3 words are now on my board…perimeter, area and volume…with more to follow.   To print, I used my regular printer but enlarged the page to 125%.  I then spliced the two pages together and mounted on red construction paper.  For directions on how to enlarge a regular page, please visit my blog post on the topic.

What I like about this new ‘word wall’ is that not only is a visual and definition provided, but a second poster shows the formula, how to calculate and how to label each answer.

My hope is that this new ‘word wall’ will contain words that my students will refer to time and time again.

If you would like to get your own set of perimeter, area and volume ‘word wall’ posters, you can purchase them here.
